What do I need to know about Fonts?

Fonts are the most important thing on your web page because that is what your text is made out of. You will need to understand all about fonts when making a web page. Below you will find some helpful information about fonts.

What types of Fonts Are There?

There are bascially two types of fonts - Text Fonts and Dingbat Fonts. There are thousands of Text Fonts that you can have on your computer. If you do webdesign and are making graphics, then you should have a large library of fonts available to use. Ding bat Fonts are like graphic fonts. You can

How do I make sure that my visitor can see the font I have used?

There is only two things you can do to ensure that your visitors see the font you are using.

1) Type your whole page and make a graphic with all your words (Not a practical thing to do. This would take forever for all the graphics to download and your visitors will be long gone before they do.
2) Offer the font you have used to your visitors to download (Again not a practical thing to do). Your visitors are not going to take the time to download your font, unzip it, and install it into the font folder and then go back and visit their site.

There is one way to ensure that a small portion of your visitors see your font and that is using it in the coding.

My Suggestion for using fonts...use a font/fonts that everyone's computer has. The most common fonts on any computer are: Arial, Veranda and Comic Sans. The default font will appear only if they do not have any of those fonts installed on their computer.

So your coding would look like this.

<CENTER><P><B><FONT FACE="Arial,Veranda,Comic Sans"><FONT SIZE=-1> Welcome to My Place</FONT></FONT></P></B></CENTER>

If your computer has Arial Font, it will be the one you will see the text with. If you do not have Arial, then it will look for Veranda and then Comic Sans. If you have none of them, then the default font will show here.

The Result:

Welcome to My Place

What other things are important about Fonts?

Since fonts are basically your whole site, it is important to understand how to use them and how to tag them.

The proper way to tag fonts is:

<Font Face="Arial"><FONT SIZE=-1> These will open up your font tags and then </FONT></FONT> will close them.

Sometimes, a graphic designer will state the name of the font used on a set. They will supply blank buttons so that you can add the text yourself.
So you will need to acquire that font in order to match the text they have put on the rest of the buttons and set. See below about Finding a Font.

Where Can I get some good Fonts?

You can find every font there is on the web. Some you have to buy while others are free. The majority of fonts are free on the web.

If you want to look for a specific font, you will need to do a font search. Since I design graphics, I'm always looking for great fonts and spend a lot of time finding them when I'm making a site for someone.

The best place I have found for searching for a font is here.
Font Seek

When doing a search for a font you will constantly come to a site in Japanese called "Fancy*For*Fonts. http://www.pca.ne.jp/fff/newfont/index.cgi
If you know the name of your font, just type it in the Keyword Search. If you get there through a font search you will need to use the url to find the font

The best library of fonts I have found is here. Fancy for Fonts

If this site doesn't have it...then it's now easily available or if it is then you will have to purchase it. It's a little trickier because it's a Japanese site but all the information inside is in English. Follow the instructions above to find a font. Click on the pen or go directly here to find the font you are looking for.
